Driftwood Art and Sculpture

Although my current creative focus is sculpting with driftwood, I have been fortunate to explore many artistic avenues in my lifetime.

The Norse believed that Odin made the first man and woman from driftwood. They were a proud seafaring people that knew the power of the natural world. They knew there was magic energy in the wood.

I forage driftwood along the California coast. I have stories of wild finds and secret honey holes filled with driftwood treasures. The next great inspiration is always around the corner, and the universe always provides you with what you need.

About Me.

I have been a chef for the last 15 years, using my spare time on various art and woodworking projects. In my life as a chef I had a pickle making business that explored pickling traditions from around the world. We sold mostly through farmers markets and had a small retail store front. I created some incredible concoctions, and even won a nationwide competition called “The Good Food Awards”, held annually in San Francisco. Things were going so well that I went ahead and opened a cafe serving a menu that featured nothing but food with pickled items incorporated into them. We even had an 8 tap seasonal flavored kombucha bar where I got to be really funky with wild foraged flavors (wild foraged edible plants are another passion). All the while doing my art on the side. I was living my best life and it was good.

2020 changed things, and like many others it was time to reset. The business wasn’t able to survive those 2020 changes. I had spent the previous decade plus using all of my creative juices by coming up with different food ideas and techniques (not to mention actually inventing a business), that when it stopped I had nowhere to put that creative energy. I built our delivery van into a camper and started soul searching on the road. It was at this time that I slowly became obsessed with driftwood, and that obsession turned into sculpting. That led to why you found this page. It happened quickly and came quite naturally. Now I spend my free time beach combing or working in my workshop using that same creative flow I tapped into as a chef, but instead of food I am creating art. It’s essentially the same thing, strange as though that may seem.
